Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the Grangemouth Council of Churches and Grangemouth Community Council. Mounting concern about levels of unemployment and poverty in the Grangemouth area resulted in a meeting of interested individuals from a wide range of disciplines and experience. This group included members of the Clergy, Councillors and local community people. The meeting explored how they could contribute to the growing need for local job creation initiatives. This group decided to set up an organisation that would also be a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee to positively address the twin problems of unemployment and poverty. They decided to call this organisation Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd.

The main objectives of the organisation are:

1) The relief of poverty by:

  • Creating employment
  • Assisting with the provision of training opportunities to enhance workskills with a view to permanent placement in the workforce
  • Providing furniture and other household goods free of charge to those referred to us, by recognised local agencies or organisations, as being in need

2) The preservation and protection of the environment for the public benefit by:

  • Recycling and reusing local resources to meet local needs
  • Reducing the volume of waste going to landfill

Today Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd has 21 permanent employees and 12 New Deal Trainees on placements. It is registered with ENTRUST as an Environmental Body under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. We currently have three areas of activity: -

  • The reuse and recycling of furniture and other household goods
  • The reuse and recycling of domestic white goods
  • The reuse and recycling of PC’s

In 2001 Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd was one of only 3 organisations in Scotland to receive a ‘Remploy Leading the Way’ Award

In 2002, Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd received a Triage ‘Employer Award’ for New Deal activities.

In the year 2002/2003 Grangemouth Enterprises uplifted 20,000 (approx) items for either reuse or recycling. That is the equivalent of 866 tonnes prevented from going to landfill.

Although largely self funded through sales and contract work, the organisation have also received money from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, the National Lottery and the Scottish Churches Community Trust.
