Grangemouth
Enterprises Ltd operates “The Falkirk ICT Recycling and Training
Project”. This is a computer recycling project that seeks
to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill whilst offering
high quality employment and training opportunities that accompanies
this activity. The project is based on the premise that the refurbishing
and subsequent reuse of existing resources is the best environmental
option for the future. By refurbished I.T. equipment and selling
it at low cost to low income households and the local community/voluntary
sector, the project will contribute to economic and social inclusion
and help to prevent the growing digital divide between those with/without
access to computer equipment.
When the European Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) Directive comes into force in 2005, it will no
longer be possible to send PC’s to landfill. Grangemouth Enterprises
is therefore offering to uplift PC’s for refurbishment or
recycling depending on the condition of the equipment. The ICT Recycling
Project has a SEPA Waste Management Licence (WML/E/120043) and is
currently working towards achieving the Environmental Management
System ISO 14001.
In the first year the project uplifted nearly 1700
pieces of computer equipment. However, we hope to uplift even greater
volumes in the coming years.
