White Goods

Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd operates a White Goods Reuse and Recycling Project.

Reused White GoodsThis project was started in December 1999 as a way of providing free or low cost refurbished domestic white goods for people who were either homeless/in need or on low income. In addition, to providing jobs and training, the positive environmental impact of the project as a result of diverting white goods from landfill for refurbishment or recycling made this a natural development for Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd.

The project has a SEPA Waste Management Licence (WML/E/20186) and is recognised by SEPA as Waste Carriers.

Initially, the project employed 3 people – an electrician, a driver and a degassing person (although this position is now defunct). By 2003, it employed 6 people. The project offers a door-step collection service and also clears the two Falkirk Council Civic Amenity sites of white goods. As a result 13,000(approx) white goods a year equating to 570 tonnes is diverted from landfill. The uplifts units are either reused or recycled depending on the quality and the reuse potential of the unit. The number of units refurbished in 2002/03 saw a 100% increase on the previous year.

Reused White GoodsThe project has gone from strength to strength with decreasing grant dependency year on year. The project started with 100% grant funding and in the current year the grant subsidy comprises less than 20% of income. By the beginning of 2004, the project should be completely self sufficient via contracts and sales.

Grangemouth Enterprises Ltd hopes to avail themselves of the opportunities arising from the introduction of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive in 2004/2005 to further development the White Goods project. They are ideally placed to take full advantage of the WEEE. We are presently upgrading our workshop facilities for both white goods and electric non-white goods to ensure compliance with the WEEE directive.

We are also currently undergoing an ISO 9001 management system.
